Reducing Carbon Through Cross-Sector Collaboration Webinar Registrations Open

The third webinar in a series of knowledge exchange activities is organised on the 06 June 2023 at 14:00-16:00 CET virtually. The webinars form a part of the Urban Nodes Platform, which seeks in creating an active dialogue and exchange between the project cities and beyond. To this extend, the webinar is open to external registrations and is offered for free.

The technical webinar will focus on the role of cross-sector collaboration in reducing the need to travel. The main contributions to the webinar are based on key results from the project SUMP-PLUS, and selected SCALE-UP partners will engage on the relevance of these results for some of the concepts developed and demonstrated in the project.

In planning for sustainable urban mobility, successful zero-carbon mitigation strategies require an appropriate mix of measures based on three strategies commonly labelled as AVOID, SHIFT, and IMPROVE. Traditionally, cities have focused in their SUMPs mainly on introducing SHIFT policy measures to improve the modal share towards sustainable modes. They are also increasingly looking at IMPROVE measures, supporting the electrification of the vehicle fleet. What has been largely neglected, until now, has been the widespread application of AVOID measures, and the engagement with other sectors of the economy that this would require. That is a knowledge gap that the project SUMP-PLUS had tried to fill in.

The basic challenge which cities face is that most travel is a ‘derived demand’: the underlying drivers of that demand result from business decisions taken by other sectors of the economy. While the transport sector is given the responsibility to provide sufficient capacity and deal with externalities, such as carbon and road safety, it has little influence over when, where, or how many trips are made.
