Exceptional traffic circumstances increase the need for digital guidance. Tanja Ylänen, graduate from the Service Design degree programme at the Turku University of Applied Sciences, is sharing her insights into this topic based on her thesis.
Safely from A to B: Scaling up freight routing in Antwerp
In a region with a major maritime port such as the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, freight transport plays an important role in the mobility system. In order to foster safe freight transport and safeguard a good connection and integration (in)to the TEN-T network and hubs, freight needs to be transported efficiently and safely from origin to destination. This means amongst others avoiding unnecessary transport through cities and village centres as well as encouraging transport via higher road networks. For this purpose, the City of Antwerp, the Antwerp Transport Region and Be-Mobile are developing a dynamic routing tool and scaling it up to the Antwerp Transport Region.
Reviving regional train traffic in Southwest Finland: A practical example for Europe’s regions
A project report examined different organization models for the regional rail transport in Southwest Finland. The report includes an assessment of the potential organizational models, based on benchmarking functioning models both in Finland and internationally and assessing the advantages and challenges of the models presented.
Cycling in Turku and in Antwerp
Katariina Salokannel, who is working at the city of Turku came to Antwerp on a work visit for a few weeks. She shared her insights on the secondment and the differences between the two cities in an interview for Smart Ways to Antwerp.
SCALE-UP partners attend RTR Conference in Brussels
SCALE-UP partners ETRA I+D, EMT Madrid and STA attended this year’s edition of the Road Transport Research (RTR) Conference. In total 61 EU-funded projects were presented this year. More than 400 persons attended the event held at the BluePoint in Brussels, Belgium over 3 days (14-16 February 2023).

High-speed electric buses? This is how the first line implemented in Madrid works
In Madrid, the EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes) has launched the first high-speed electric bus line. Its route links the districts of Valdebebas and Sanchinarro with the Ramón y Cajal Hospital. In total, the route is 31 km long and will be served, as of May this year, by ten electric buses supplied by Irizar.
New trams running in Antwerp
The new vehicles, named “Stadslijner” - after the “Zeelijner” that runs on the Belgian coast line - will start to appear on the public tram network from January 2023. In total 58 new trams have been ordered by De Lijn, are over 30 metres long and can carry up to 180 passengers.
